Resident Program
The resident program is a unique way for people to go to college, have a place to live, a part time job, and even a scholarship for school. Personnel enrolled in this program work one 24 hour shift per week and receive an apartment located at a fire station complete with all utilities except for telephone in return. For one extra 24 hour shift per two weeks worked, personnel can receive a scholarship worth $3500.00 per year to pay for school. Extra shifts that are scheduled beyond the required time are paid to the employee at a regular hourly rate. These personnel are scheduled for shifts within the department to supplement the career staff on duty. To apply you must:
► Interview with the Program Coordinator.
► Possess a valid Alabama driver's license.
► Successfully complete CPAT (Candidate Physical Agility Test)
► Be able to attend Recruit school within the first year of entering the program.
Personnel who are accepted into the program will be required to obtain an Ambulance Operators License and attend a 400 hour Firefighter I course within 1 year of entering the program. After completion of the Firefighter I course at the department's expense, you are required to continue with the department for two years.
Apartments are located at the following stations:
Station 183 - 6 one room apartments
Station 184 - 4 two room apartments
Station 185 - 6 one room apartments
